The State of Texas issues instruction permits, also known as learner’s permits, which allows individuals no younger than 15 years of age beginning to drive the opportunity to drive with a licensed driver, occupying the front seat, that is 21 years of age or older. Upon completion of the first week of classroom instruction students of Street Smart Driving School will receive a DE-964 certificate which must be in-hand when applying for the permit at a local DPS office. Other requirements are as follows:

Minimum age of 15 years old
Present proof of identity and social security number
Verification of Attendance and Enrollment in School (TEA form GEA-043R93)
Proof of Texas vehicle registration and liability insurance (if you own a vehicle)
Parental authorization signature
Payment of required fees
Pass written and vision examinations
Completion of required forms available at DPS office
*All students getting their permit after May 1, 2010 have to have additional driving hours. The parents have to complete an official TEA record form showing that the student has driven at least 20 hours with a parent. These hours are broken down as follows: 10 hour during the day time and 10 hours at night. This form has to be turned in with the DE964 at the DPS office when the student goes to get their Probationary license.
